Amyris is more commonly known as West Indian Sandalwood, as it can be used as a cheaper alternative to genuine sandalwood. It’s main country of origin today is Haiti, however the botanical origin of the tree yielding the oil was little known until 1886. The locals refer to it as “candle wood” due to it’s high oil content which makes it burn like a candle, and is used by both fishermen and traders alike. It has been used for wound washes, flu, childbirth recovery and diarrhoea, however it is perfectly suitable to use as just a room fragrance. Sadly the production of Amyris oil has decreased over time due to hostile climatic conditions in Haiti.
